1 Hour a Week to Get the Life You Want
Dec 18, 2024Your New Year's resolution is doomed.
It's not just you. Only 10% of all resolutions lead to lasting change.
Why? Change is hard.
- Your habits have to change
- The way others relate to you has to change
- Your environment (home, work, fridge, etc) has to change
- You need accountability, especially for big changes
Your standard response is to grit your teeth, expend all the energy you have, and try to make the changes necessary. But you know it's unlikely.
I want to give you another way, but first let's talk about why you make a New Year's resolution in the first place.
Your Week to Week Experience is Not the Life You Want
Any given week feels about the same for you.
You're overwhelmed, putting out fires all week. You're busier than you've ever been, but you drive home at night trying to remember what it is you actually did that day. You find something for dinner, then crash on the couch with no energy left, hoping there's something interesting on Netflix. Then you wake up Monday and do it all over again.
The year turning slaps you in the face, screaming, "WAKE UP!". It's context that time IS actually passing, and this creates dissonance for you that you're not living the life you want. Maybe you're not reaching the financial goals you hoped for by this point in your life, or maybe your personal goals and dreams sit on the shelf while you simply grind out your weeks.
You creating a New Year's resolution is a rational response. It's your effort to get your freedom back. The freedom to choose how you prioritize your time to get the life you want.
Sadly, it's unlikely to succeed. Do this instead.
Start Small With 1 Hour a Week
Instead of a total life overhaul, I want you to focus on just one hour a week.
Why? Because as you read "1 hour", you thought "No way. That's way too little!"
You see, you believe you can actually control 1 hour a week. You might even know the exact hour you'll do it. And regardless of your circumstance, you're confident you can protect that hour to move your goals forward.
And that's exactly why this will work: you're actually going to do it.
What should you do in that time? Whatever moves your goals forward:
- Strategic Thinking - Step away from the chaos and plan your next big move. This might mean brainstorming ways to grow your business, outlining quarterly priorities, or solving a persistent challenge that’s been on your mind.
- Advance Your Dream - Pick one specific task related to your side project or passion project. This could be writing a blog post, sketching out your business idea, or researching a new opportunity.
- Personal Development - Invest in yourself by learning something new. Use the hour to read, listen to a podcast, or take an online course that aligns with your ambitions.
The Power of Incremental Progress
After a few weeks, this one hour will be your new normal, simply what you do week over week. When this happens, you can take the next step and add another hour, repeating the same process.
You can repeat this as long as you like, and begin to take control of your time to get the life you want.
Don't rush it, go slow. The odds are against you if you try to change too much at once.
