What Does Your Team Do All Week?
Dec 27, 2023How did your team spend this last week?
If you're not sure...
Or if you're not certain whatever your team did was actually aligned to your goals...
What's your plan to solve this in 2024 WITHOUT micromanaging your team?
Here's an EASY SOLUTION I use as a COO that you can put in place TODAY: The Weekly Priority Email
Here's how to do it:
1. Tell your team to send you their priorities for next week, by Friday by noon.
2. Require that they indicate how each priority advances your team goals.
3. Review and give feedback by 2pm. If priorities are not aligned to team goals, unrealistic (too many), or ineffective (too few), this is your chance to solve it, and gives them a few hours to update before the weekend.
4. When ready, reply and approve the priorities.
5. Next Friday you'll receive the Weekly Priority Email again, and you can easily see the progress (or lack of progress) your team members made, and you can support them accordingly.
Why does this work so well?
* Team Member Empowerment :: This forces your team to compress down plans themselves that are aligned to your goals. You aren't telling them what to do, you are empowering them to create plans that help the team win.
* Intention Creates Commitment :: Creating intention for the upcoming week, and sharing it with a key stakeholder (you) dramatically increases your team member's commitment to the priorities.
* Option for Course Correction :: By sending the priorities to you, you can quickly review and ensure the activities are aligned. Likely you'll have to do some coaching the first few weeks, but overtime your team will learn what's aligned to team goals and what isn't.
* Team Member Peace of Mind to Focus :: By approving your team members' priorities, you give them a great gift: peace of mind to focus. Much time is lost week over week wondering if the prioritized activities are the right activities to focus on. By approving the priorities, you allow your team members to focus on just those items, and set other priorities aside.
If you want to supercharge this process, you can invite your team members to plan their weeks together, creating intense alignment between your team members, and dramatically increasing the impact of their activities.
